Bills for Spills :: Rail Jam

We're inviting you to New Haven's first snowboarding event. It's about time! It'll be a night filled with snowboarders, music, giveaways, SNOW, prizes.... Bound to be a good time!

The event, called Bills for Spills, will help hundreds of young athletes—some learning to build self-esteem through sports, others injured extreme athletes who must fight their way back to health. Bills for Spills is a benefit to support the work of HEAL Clothing and The Chill Foundation

What is happening to the industry?

I found an article about this new snowboard to hit the market... and it made me laugh, cringe and then wonder who would actually spend an obscene amount of money on this. Ladies and gentlemen, CHANEL has crossed over to our side and entered the snowboard market. Now you can match your designer bag, with your designer moon boots with your designer snowboard.
Ok, so who would actually buy it? No one I know, unless some of my snowboard bum friends have been holding out on me. I doubt the board even performs well, and after doing some research I could not find any reviews on the board, etc. It says it is made out of wood, resin and fiberglass. I hope that they 'forgot' to mention some other ingredients otherwise this board would be an interesting ride. I wonder how many sizes it comes in?
I have a small feeling that whoever does purchase this board is much more concerned with fashion, image and brand-names then actually riding. The most action this board probably sees is the roof rack and the ski rack or wall outside of the lodge/bar.

Carl's Jr. + Rob Dyrdek

Skater Rob Dyrdek sure has a lot going on. With his new show Fantasy Factory, a line of toys called Wild Grinders, a feature film called Street Dreams and now he has teamed up with Carl's Jr. to bring you collectors cups! Because fast food and skaters go oh so well together.
The press release had this to say, "
In stores now and while supplies last, fast food and skateboarding fans can visit their local Carl’s Jr. and pick up a 42 oz. limited edition Rob Dyrdek collector’s cup when purchasing a large drink or a combo. The cups feature three designs by Rob – one introducing his exclusive toy line, Wild Grinders; Rob’s feature film Street Dreams; and his signature DC shoes. All three cups feature Rob’s version of the Carl’s Jr. iconic Happy Star, now with 50% more muscles!"

Interesting, and awesome. I'm sure Big Black is happy to have unlimited access to fast food!!

Stop New York's Ski Tax!

New York ski areas are banding together to fight a proposed tax on lift tickets and lessons that Governor David Patterson has put forward to help balance the state's $15 billion dollar state deficit. Ski areas are not required to collect sales tax on life tickets or lessons and the ski areas want to fight this!
Within New York's 47 ski resorts, collecting the ski tax would not only impact the recreational skiers but also the after-school programs that participate in skiing or snowboarding. The extra sales tax could make it unaffordable for some children.
Skiing in New York represents a $1.1 billion industry during the prime four winter months. The ski industry, statewide, employs more than 18,000 people and attracts more then 4 million people!
Stop the sales tax! Keep snowboarding and skiing affordable!

Burton & 2010 Olympics

Burton and Gore-Tex have combined forces to create the U.S. snowboarding team's uniform for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Jake Burton had this to say, "
I’ve never been a fan of uniforms, but if anyone is going to outfit the U.S. Olympic Snowboarding Team, we’re the company that should step up and do it right,” said Jake Burton, Founder and Chairman of Burton Snowboards. “As with everything we design and manufacture, we have already brought together our creative people with some of our country’s best snowboarders to ensure that the final product will represent the riders, the sport and the U.S.A. in an authentic way. Our partnership with GORE-TEX enables the riders to rest assured that regardless of the weather in Vancouver, they will be warm, dry and free to do their best.”

The answer for freestyle riders?

ATTN: Freestyle Riders...

Featuring a park-specific flex and cushioning system and available in wine-country purple, these kicks will drive you to be the best you can be. The results? Great snow feel and nimble on rails and butters; power balanced with precision.
Cue the 2010 Burton Grail Boot.
Photobucket

This boot replaces the Sabbath boot in the 2010 Burton boot line-up. Burton is saying that this is The boot for all-mountain, freestyle riding.
Burton says it has "a slimmer profile eliminates toe drag and weight, while the fully flared liner lets you press and butter in ways that would make doves cry. Worried about that “Holy Shit” landing ending your existence? Your sole is saved with the most advanced cushioning system ever developed that addresses the medial/lateral support, response, and canted cushioning benefits that park riding demands.”

Can't wait to see all of the other 2010 product!

Hello out there in Internet world... The snowboard industry has a lot going on in the next few months so hope you have some travel funds saved up because some of these events you do not want to miss. Actually, I'm just excited there are still major events going on with all of the sponsors dropping like flies and contests being cancelled! Gotta keep the spirit up and show up to these events! Anyways.... Some to check out:

Waterville Valley, NH turns pink: for the 4th year, Waterville turns pink to support Boarding for Breast Cancer on Super bowl Sunday, Feb 1st. There's a "pink rail jam" sponsored by Oakley, raffles to win all sorts of goodies. In the last 3 years, Waterville Valley has raised $20,000 in it's support. So get out there and go pink!

Bundle up, it is supposed to snow that night! Gates open at 3pm.

Red Bull Buttercup; Mount Snow: Feb 28th head North to Mount Snow for the newest contest series on the east coast. " Red Bull has built a super fun, custom butterpad that will be traveling to each resort in the series. Jib, bonk, tap and slide your way across the multi-featured pad however you like, just make sure you lay it on with a lot of smooth buttering." Winning finals could make you $1,000 richer. Get that paper.

And the biggest snowboarding event on the east coast is Burton's US Open. Taking place March 16-22nd at Stratton Mountain, VT. Always a good time, outstanding riders and parties that seem to last for daysssssssssss.

2009 Vans Cup Canceled

Vans released a short memo, stating that the the 2009 Vans Cup had been canceled.

The memo reads:

We regret to announce that the 2009 Vans Cup has been canceled.

Thank you to everyone who has played a role in making the Vans Cup one of the world’s top snowboarding events.
We apologize for any inconvenience this news may cause.

The 5th annual event was scheduled for Mammoth and was also slated to be the culmination of the Vans Mini Cup series which hosted rail events earlier this season.
This isn't the only competition that has been called off. With a struggling economy and tighter budgets, the competitions, parties AND sponsors are dropping like flies! Definitely will not be the same this season. Sorry to all those who killed it at the Mini-Cups!! But good job anyways!

Dew Tour Re-Cap :: Mt. Snow, VT

This past weekend at Mount Snow was the 2nd stop of the Dew Tour. The next and last stop is at Northstar at Tahoe in Truckee, CA in February. Tons and tons of snowboarding and skiing fanatics came out to watch the pros throw down, party with the pros, try to score VIP bracelets and ride Mt. Snow. The "festival village" they set up also had the Flobots playing along with Boys like Girls, lots of vendor booths and food and more Mountain Dew then a teenage boy could dream of. Everyone was super amped up on the caffeine and psyched for all the free give a ways.
Men's slopestyle finals was an amazing event to watch. With rails at the top, one rail in the middle and two big jumps at the bottom made for a serious course.
Coming in first place from Norway was Torstein Horgmo, 92.67. Second place was Olympic Gold medalist, Shaun White with a final score of 92.33. And in third place was Andreas Wiig, also from Norway with a final score of 88.00.

On Sunday was the superpipe finals with Shaun White coming in first and totally killing it in the pipe. Steve Fisher in second and Kevin Pearce in Third place. There was a approximately of 24,800 fans that came out to witness snowboarding and skiing at its finest. It was crazy! Check out www.allisports.com for full coverage of the weekend!

Bringing back the 80's

We received two more colors of the classic Oakley Frogskin in, the crystal black with the red iridium lens and the matte clear with grey lens. The black with the red lens is sick. This is the model that helped to launch the company back in 1985 and also started the endless copy-cat designs of the classic Frogskin. They only release a limited number of each colorway so once they sell out, THAT'S IT!
Come down and check out what we have. We also have pink, white and grey in stock.

Shred Jobs

Since I was younger, I've always been jealous of the people who lived in the mountain towns and worked on the hill, at the restaurants, the shops, etc. I figured they were riding all of the time, knew the sickest secret spots, super relaxed and basically, living the dream. Boy, was I wrong.
I lived in a mountain town, Truckee, CA. I worked at Northstar. I even worked on the snow. You would think I was riding more then anyone else? Well, I was riding before AND after anyone else but no one gets ultimate full days of riding in while living in the mountain town... With some exceptions.

Liftees- Work on the snow all day, in their snow gear. Pro: They get 1st tracks and get ride breaks all throughout the day. Con: they have to watch you and all of the other joeys ride around all day and tell you what you're missing out on. Duh.

Retail Jobs- You'll have the same tourist problem. Pro: working in a snowboard retail shop is you should get plenty of riding time in with sweet deals on gear. Con: selling product to tourists who have no idea what they're doing and working during peak hours

Restaurant jobs- Definitely pay well with tips. Pro: you get to ride all day and work nights. Con: your social life will suffer from working nights and riding all day. With little sleep to be had.

Night Park Crew or Groomers: You pretty much get to ride all day, every day. Pro: you'll get first chair and last chair any day you'd like. Con: Working till 7:30am for 1st chair at 8am will leave you sleep deprived and set your body clock off.... alot

Ski/Snowboard Instructors: You get to ride all day. Which is awesome. Pro: you'll probably get some big tips from those brat's parents after you had to deal with them during their week vacation. Con: you have to deal with brats riding all day. On green runs.

There are so many other jobs, these are just ones I was very familiar with. No matter what, you move to a mountain town to ride. So make sure you find a job that will allow you to do so without letting your social life or sleep schedule suffer. After all, riding all day and enjoying what the mountain has to offer isn't as fun unless you have friends and an active social life to share it with.

Christmas Cheer...

I know Christmas was yesterday so I'm a little behind in posting this but its still the Holiday Season! Hope everyone has a great holiday season. And everything is still 30% off in enclave except for the Uggs!

Author Unknown:

‘Twas the day before Christmas, when all through the state;
The snow was softly falling, riders couldn’t wait.

The chairlifts were hanging by the slopes with care;
In hopes that the lift-ops soon would be there.

The skiers were nestled all snug in their beds;
While visions of powder-shots danced in their heads.

When out on the hill there arose such a clatter;
They sprang from their beds to see what was the matter.

Away to the lodge they flew like a flash;
Put on their ski hats and grabbed their goggle sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow;
Gave the luster of mid-day to moguls below.

When, what to their wondering eyes should appear;
But a miniature gondola, and eight sets of ski gear.

With a little round rider, so lively and quick;
They knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles his powder turns came;
And he whistled, and shouted, and called resorts by name.

“Ski, Powderhorn! ski, Echo! ski, Stowe and Mohawk!
Ride, Sunlight! ride, Telluride! ride, Sugarbush and Northstar!

Ski, Cooper! ski, Bolton! ski, Crested Butte and Magic!
Ride, Powder Ridge! ride, Okemo! ride, Buttermilk and Killington!

Ski, Loveland! ski Heavenly and ski Winter Park!
Ride, Aspen Highlands! ride, Bear and ride Mammoth!

To the top of the mountain! To the top of the run!
Skiing and riding in the US is fun!

And they heard him exclaim, ere he skied out of sight,
Happy holidays to all, and to all a good-night!

Discover Liftopia

For a snowboarder on a budget, buying lift tickets is painful. Some places charge you almost a hundred bucks. That's a lot of money for a rider on a budget who doesn't make that much. It's awesome if you can clip tickets or find a hookup but sometimes poaching a mountain can get you in trouble (legal fees are not fun). So if you are looking to travel to a mountain where you aren't "in" with the locals, check out Liftopia. It's a website that finds you the best deals and resorts to help you save anywhere from 15% to 48%! It's sort of like expedia.com or one of those cheap airline ticket websites, but for lift tickets. Way awesome.
So, check it out. www.liftopia.com. Find some deals. Don't use being broke as an excuse as to why you couldn't get out on the mountain because there are plenty of ways to get around paying full-price. This website being one of them! Get your shred on.

New News!

Get ready for some snow! CT will finally get hit with some snow which is supposed to amount to something. Which is just pretty much awesome. I hope you put your snow tires on!
On another note, Mount Snow is hosting the DEW tour January 8th to 11th. This is going to be an awesome time with great riders, wild parties and features BOTH freestyle skiing and snowboarding. It is the ONLY east coast stop on the tour. Mount Snow is only 2.5 hours away from New Haven. So if I were you, I would start planning in order to catch the best freestylers play around on the 95 acres of freestyle terrain Mount Snow has. Elena Hight, Danny Kass, Hana Beaman, Keir Dillon, Kelly Clark, Mason Aguirre, Kevin Pearce and Pat Moore will all be there plus others! Check out http://www.allisports.com/events/mount-snow for all the detailed details.
ALSO, we got some fresh new gear in from Mishka, RVCA and Burton. Some come and check it out! This is the new Mishka Varsity Jacket that we just got in.... And don't forget that everything is 30% off except for Uggs!
